When God Created the Kaydet Girl

The good Lord was creating a model into His sixth day of overtime for a kaydet girl when an angel appeared. She said, “Lord you seem to be having a lot of trouble with this one. What’s wrong with the standard model?”

The Lord replied, “Have you seen the specs on this one? She has to be completely independent, and possess the qualities of a very patient girlfriend of a cadet. She must be able to subject herself to the scrutinizing looks of his mistahs, and be able to carry on cheerfully in the absence of her boyfriend at times she needs him the most. She must be willing to meet her cadet whenever and wherever he gets a chance to go out on a duty or a privilege upon sudden notice. And most of all she must willfully embrace the ideals of her cadet’s chosen life without question and with the same zeal.”

The angel replied, “That’s impossible.”
The Lord answered, “Don’t worry, I will make other kaydet girls to help her. And I will give her an unusually strong heart so it can swell with pride in her boyfriend’s achievements, sustain the pain of separations, beat soundly when it is overworked and tired, be large enough to say “I understand” when she actually doesn’t and say “I love you” regardless of anything.”

“Lord,” said the angel, touching his arm gently, “go to bed and get some rest. You can finish this tomorrow.”

“I can’t stop now,” said the Lord. “I am so close to creating something unique. Already this model heals herself when she is sick, is used to waving goodbye to her cadet from a pier, a runway or a depot, and understand why it’s important that he leave.”

The angel circled the model of the kaydet girl, looked at it closely and sighed, “It looks fine but it’s too soft.” “She might look soft,” said the Lord. “But she has undeniable strength. You would not believe what she can endure.” Finally the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek of the Lord’s creation. “There’s a leak,” she announced. “It’s a tear,” the angel continued, “what is it there for?”

The Lord looked puzzled and softly said, “I did not put it there.”
